The challenge

Turning bio-based promise into industrial performance

Bio-based polymers offer a promising path towards more sustainable materials, yet their industrial adoption remains limited. Renewable monomers are not always available at the variety and scale needed by manufacturers, and formulations developed for fossil-based materials cannot simply be transferred without risking a loss of performance.

This creates a demanding development cycle: researchers must understand how new molecular structures behave, manufacturers must identify workable processing conditions, and end users need evidence that the resulting materials perform in real applications.

Our approach

Connecting chemistry, data and application testing

REMAP combines the synthesis of new monomers from second-generation biomass with machine-learning models that help predict polymer properties and guide experimental work.

Instead of treating synthesis, modelling and validation as separate stages, REMAP connects them in a shared learning cycle.

Promising materials will move from laboratory synthesis to pilot-scale production and application prototypes, with the aim of validating selected solutions at technology readiness level 5.

    Develop renewable building blocks and turn them into promising polymer families.

    Machine-learning models

    Build predictive tools using experimental data to guide formulation and process decisions.

    Pilot and industrial prototyping

    Scale selected materials and validate them in coatings, adhesives and additive-manufacturing applications.

Renewable monomers and polymer families with high bio-based content and documented structure–property relationships.

Predictive tools

Machine-learning models designed to guide experiments and shorten material-development cycles.

Validated prototypes

Pilot-scale production and TRL 5 testing of selected systems in coatings, adhesives and additive manufacturing.

Cross-border capacity

A stronger innovation network connecting research organisations and industry across the POCTEFA territory.
